The Hudson Valley Seed Library
Organic, Certified Heirloom Open Pollinated Seeds

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last 20 or so years…You may not know there are bad seeds out there!

Bad seeds that are genetically modified and cause all kind of health repercussions.

Then there are the Good Seeds!

In Ulster County, Ken Green was a librarian at the Gardiner Public Library in 2004. He developed a strong interest in preserving  Heirloom seed varieties. He decided to add them to the library  catalog. His goal was to have library patrons “check them out” and grow them in their own gardens and then return saved seeds at the end of the season. The program was a small,  but successful. It was one of the first of it’s kind in the country! Four years later, Ken and his partner Doug Muller decided to turn the library into a mission driven, homestead-based business.

Today, eleven years after it’s conception at a Hudson Valley small town library, Ken & Doug travel to flower and garden shows from Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle  and beyond  with a marketplace booth selling organic certified heirloom seeds from their farm and other local farms here in the Hudson Valley.

3 HV Seed Library

This is THE Hudson Valley Story, you’ll want to share!

The Hudson Valley Seed Library has the ABC’s of vegetables. Arugula, beans, chard, Okra, tomatoes and watermelon just to name a few of the 35 different varieties of vegetables. 45 different herbs are available. Annuals like a variety of basil including basil: cinnamon, black cumin and mammoth long island dill. For everlasting garden to table perennial seasonings you’ll find Anise Hyssop which makes a lovely tea, garlic chives, echinacea, german Thyme, Greek oregano and more. They also have a hearty variety of flower seeds which include a large selection of sunflowers, zinnias,  and 100+ types of Annuals and perennials.

Hudson Valley Seed library offers their seeds online, be sure to get their catalog or visit the website to view stores in states that carry these seeds. Locally, in the Hudson Valley you can find them at Adams Fairacre Farms. You can also order directly from the website where you will also find an online store that includes gardening tools and supplies, gifts, artwork and more!

Each Spring Hudson Valley Seed library commissions artists to create original works of art which are then used to illustrate their heirloom seed packs. Click this link to view the packets since 2008 http://www.seedlibrary.org/art-packs.html

Be sure to check their website as they travel across the country from one flower show to another. In addition if you would like to participate at a flower show or at their farm in Accord, tell them THE Hudson Valley Story sent you and email them at mail at seedlibrary.org to coordinate. Workshops are also available here in the Hudson Valley so check the website for the up coming 2015 season.

Eileen Fisher
is THE Hudson Valley Story

Eileen Fisher 3

These are THE words I think of to describe FASHION! It’s HOW we WANT Fashion to make us FEEL! Nobody does this like EILEEN FISHER! Eileen Fisher is THE Quintessential Hudson Valley Story and is celebrating her 30th Anniversary!

Eileen Fisher B&W Zip Skirt

We love a woman that does things her way! Apparently, many women feel the same! Perhaps that is why this company grew from an idea, 4 classic garments and a three thousand dollar order in 1984 to gross sales of 360 million in 2012 and an 1100 employee company based in Irvington NY since 1992!

Eileen Fisher Beige

Today, there are more then 67 Eileen Fisher stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Her brand is in major department stores such as Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. Her first store opened on Ninth Street in the East Village in 1987 and is still opened. Today there are six locations in Manhattan.

Eileen Fisher B&W Bloomingdales

 The Lab

The Eileen Fisher Lab is at 1 Bridge Street in Irvington. We recently visited this Hudson River 5550 square foot location where the clothing company has been based. Appropriate enough you can even see a view of Manhattan from here! This is where you can discover current picks from the new and recent season, sample designs that you won’t find anywhere else, accessories and recycled clothing from personal collections in a program known as Green Eileen.

Eileen Fisher 4

A few steps away is where Eileen and her team share and exchange ideas in an open room with no cubicles about lifestyles, fashion and the clothing the world has embraced.

It all starts with a six piece collection! The Coat, The Cardigan, The Box-Top, The Maxi, The Tank and The Dress! Six easy pieces you want to grab which are modern and make you feel good. They are appropriate for work, play, weekends, and the city! These are THE GO-To Pieces and staples that wardrobes should be based on. Clothes that should be in everyone’s closet so it takes the worry of what to wear…which is WHY Eileen Fisher started designing. . .and of course they should be in black!

Eileen Fisher Matelic Handbag

Thousands of women across the planet must surly be thanking their lucky stars when Eileen decided to leave Illinois for NYC and press forward with her vision about fashion from what was her prior career as an interior decorator and graphic designer. I believe that is what they call KISMET!

Eileen Fisher 5

Maybe that is why wearing Eileen Fisher clothing feels different. For those working at the Irvington corporate location it is different. Collaboration flows freely from different departments. Eileen is committed to thinking green with organic and sustainable fibers, manufacturing in the USA and recycling clothes with Green Eileen.

Eileen Fisher GREEN EILEEN

The women who wear Eileen Fisher clothes want to experience the magic that happens when you put on a piece of clothing that has been pared to its simple pure essence. It comes alive on your body. It makes you move differently. It changes the way you think and feel about yourself!

Eileen Fisher Gloves

That is what FASHION is all about! Feeling the Magic and how you feel about yourself! The Hudson Valley Story applauds Eileen Fisher for her vision and her commitment to fashion, women and our planet!

The Hudson Valley Story notes Meditation classes are also available at the Eileen Fisher Irvington headquarters on Sundays from 10am – noon in their cafeteria. The classes are organized through the Westchester Buddhist Center.

Cold Spring General Store

Wikipedia says…A general store is a rural or small town store that carries a general line of merchandise. It carries a broad selection of merchandise sometimes in a small space where people from the town and surrounding rural areas come to purchase all their general goods.

IMG_9300 (800x533)

Well if that’s the case…people should make the Cold Spring General Store a destination visit from wherever they are in the Hudson Valley because this store is filled with a feast for the eyes and your tummy! Foodies this shop is a must visit!

chocolate - Cold Spring General Store

Craig and Deanna Muraszewski opened the Cold Spring General Store March 2014. I recently found this shop on my return to the area. The shop has been carefully curated by Craig and Deanna for a modern day general store!

Craig - Cold Spring General Store

This shop has an energy you can feel when you first set eyes on it from outside. There’s something inviting about it! Once inside…everything catches your eye! Maybe that’s because Craig was Director of Operations at Foragers an Organic Food company in NYC prior to opening the Cold Spring General Store with his wife. He had become tired of the commute and the couple decided to pursue their dream and open the shop in the town they lived in. It’s a good thing they did!

The store is filled with handmade NY state goods and local provisions. They carry diversified items from maple syrup to handmade hats by a local artist in Garrison. Craig says one of his favorite items in the shop is BJORN QORN which is sun popped popcorn made here in the Hudson Valley.

Cold Spring General Store

The shop is part grocery store, part home store, part gift shop. It stocks local produce, cheese meats and beverages. There are candles, carrying bags, barware and a nice modern book section with books about what people are doing;Raising children, forging berries and wild flowers, vegan and gluten-free lifestyles.

Barware - Cold Spring General Store

Upon entering the shop the catchy bar area draws one’s attention not only to the gift items but bottles of Cocktail Crate Lavender Bloom, Ginger Bee and Spiced Old Fashioned that are dedicated to make drinks more exciting!

Cocktail Create Cold Spring General Store

We encourage you to visit the shop. It would be great to visit on a Sunday drive or any other day and we’re sure you would find something special for your home or holiday gift giving. Plus you can check out the other shops and restaurants in Cold Spring! Be sure to sign up for the newsletter on their website.
